A look back at the journey
Time for YOU to go "the next mile .....
Randy Pasqua (and Don Washburn) spent two days on a 130 mile bicycle journey across the Maryville District. During that same time District Superintendent Charles Maynard walked 100 miles across the district over a 5-day period. The idea behind "the next mile" was to raise awareness for the Imagine No Malaria campaign and give the people of Africa the chance to go "the next mile."
In the end hundreds of people across the district had in some way become a part of these special journeys. A couple of days after the physical journeys ended, people gathered for a rally to not only mark what had been done, but remember the many miles still to go in the fight against malaria. While "the next mile" event may be over, there are still many stories to tell and ways YOU can join the fight.
Many of you have been coming up with many creative ways to raise money and awareness for the Imagine No Malaria campaign. Please feel free to share those stories and pictures with us here at "The Next Mile" by e-mailing [email protected] .
Keep checking this website as we all work together to go that "next mile" to IMAGINE a world WITHOUT malaria!

What is the "Next Mile?"
By putting faith into action, the people of the United Methodist Church want to give the children of Africa the chance to go "the next mile." During the week of April 21st, District Superintendent Charles Maynard crossed his district on foot (a five day journey). Camp Ministries Director Randy Pasqua (and Camp Lookout director Don Washburn) did the same in a two day bicycle ride covering 130 miles. Along the way these men (and several others who joined them at various points along the way) helped encouraged countless others to join in the fight against malaria in Africa.

An initiative of the United Methodist Church, INM aims to focus on four key areas in an effort to rid the African continent of malaria, a mosquito borne illness. A few years ago a child died every 30 seconds of malaria. Today that happens every 60 seconds. Through prevention, education, communication and treatment the people of the United Methodist Church believe that a world with NO malaria is within reach, especially with your continued help and support.
Charles Maynard
Charles started in the ministry in 1973 working as a youth worker at Brainerd UMC in the Chattanooga District. He currently oversees the 64 churches that make up the Maryville District. Maynard loves to tell a great story and spend time hitting the trails. Both of these passions are vital parts of his ministry. In an interview with the Knoxville News-Sentinel,Maynard said "People are part of creation. I want people to live in God's kingdom. I want them to have that experience of being loved, being valued and being whole."
Randy Pasqua
Randy is the Executive Director of Camp and Retreat Ministries for the Holston Conference. There are four United Methodist Camps located in Virginia, Tennessee and Georgia offering a variety of Summer Camp opportunities, retreats, Christian education and service. In the Maryville District you will find Camp Wesley Woods, a center for Christian oriented outdoor education for more than 50 years.
The Maryville District
Stretching from Sweetwater to Sevierville and Seymour to Tellico Plains, the Maryville District is one of a dozen districts in the Holston Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church. In all there are 64 churches on a mission "to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world." The Maryville District has pledged to raise $110,000 towards eliminating deaths from malaria in Africa through the Imagine No Malaria initiative.
